Older dogs are always difficult to rehome becuase most people want a young, lively new family member, and many old dogs have medical problems which need attention.
The following rescues specialise in homing older dogs, including sighthounds.
Tailends exists to take in elderly or terminally ill dogs (often – but not exclusively – greyhounds). Our dogs come from situations of abuse or neglect and are unlikely to be re-homed in the normal way.
The greyhounds have normally lived their entire lives in kennels – initially as racing dogs and then kept in bleak conditions out of sight of the general public and with no chance of a home. They have rarely received any veterinary care or pain relief. Some have been fed poor quality food and had infrequent access to clean fresh water. They have sometimes been housed, without coats or proper bedding, in kennels that provide limited protectionfrom the weather. They commonly suffer from crippling diseases, untreated infections or old injuries.
The Oldies Club was formed on an internet dog chat forum by a large group of people who felt great empathy with the plight of elderly dogs that end up in rescue centres all over the country. The initial inspiration behind the idea was a 13-year-old collie we called Ted. Ted was blind in one eye and was terrified in the noisy, stark kennel environment. He had to stay in kennels as a stray for 7 days but when no owner came forward to claim him, steps were taken to get Ted into a domestic situation immediately. Once in a foster home Ted thrived, the skinny dull-coated nervous boy became a healthy, active and rejuvenated character and became a star of the internet.

I just love the oldies. My own retired greyhound winnie came from the “adopt an oldie” website.
